Compassionate Release (Short, 2016)
In a tragic accident, Laura loses her daughter Hannah when a police officer mistakes Hannah for a burglar. But instead of fleeing the scene, the police officer, Carl, comforts Hannah in her final moments and surrenders to the authorities.
Laura, as Hannah’s mother, must now decide whether or not to press charges. But a long-ago crime, plaguing her conscience for years, comes back to haunt her. She, like Carl, once killed an innocent person in a hit and run accident, but unlike Carl, Laura evaded the law and never took responsibility for her misdeeds in order to take care of her then very young daughter.
Two accidents. Two fatal consequences. Two very different responses. Who is more worthy of forgiveness? Perhaps the question is not whether or not Laura can forgive Carl’s unforgivable crime, but if she can forgive her own.
